The Fiddle TV Kickstarter Project

What is FiddleTV?

FiddleTV is a new concept for an online series of short documentaries following young musicians playing old time, Americana genres such as bluegrass, jazz, and western swing.

Each episode will feature a single artist or band, and highlight their creative process, following them through live performance or recording as appropriate.  The episodes will explore why young people are interested in Americana roots music, and showcase some of the new twists on historic genres that young artists are creating today.

FiddleTV will be distributed as free, online "webisodes."  In addition, bonus content with more from the artists will be distributed on DVD; we hope, eventually, to create a product that we can proudly showcase at film festivals and music events around the US.

What will the money be used for?

The vast majority of the seed money we are asking for will be used for the production of a short documentary that does justice to the music in quality. We will use the money for professional equipment and production, including the cost of editing and post production.

We will also use a small portion of the money for promotional and incidental costs, such as printing DVDs with bonus footage, compensating artists and crew, and creating promotional materials like t-shirts and stickers to help spread the word about FiddleTV.

Eventually, we would like to make FiddleTV a self-sustaining and ongoing project by using the material we create with the help of Kickstarter to find sponsors and artists for future episodes.

Why is FiddleTV important?

We believe that our collective history is expressed more fully in traditional music than most other forms of media.  The preservation and perpetuation of old time music is, therefore, crucial to our understanding of our place in time and culture.

We've chosen to highlight young artists, because we think it is important to explore why young people become involved in playing music that their peers may view as outdated or irrelevant.  We believe that by focusing on young musicians, we will be able to show old time music is not a thing of the past, but an evolving and fresh art form that can be enjoyed by all music fans.

New media, such as video podcasts and online shows,  is an unprecedented tool to expose new audiences to Americana music. We hope to not only create an ongoing series that will be enjoyed by current fans of old time genres, but that will also initiate new fans of all ages, and spark the desire in a new generation to be involved in supporting the artists and genres we feature.

Who Is MilkDrive?

MilkDrive is a self professed "alt-folk-progressive acoustic string band" comprised of Noah Jeffries, Dennis Ludiker, Brian Beken, and Matt Mefford.  After the winds of fate brought the four talented instrumentalists together in Austin, Texas, they promptly got to work combining the band members' bluegrass, fiddle, acoustic and jazz backgrounds to create a unique, complex and exciting new sound.

MilkDrive has toured much of the United States, as well as played acclaimed festivals such as RockyGrass in Lyons, Colorado and Austin City Limits Music Festival.  They released their debut studio album, Road From Home, in 2011, and can be found online at milkdrive.com.
With their innovative approach to combining and exploring old time genres in a new and fresh way, we are sure that MilkDrive will be beloved by a variety of audiences, and we are very proud and excited to feature them in our pilot episode of FiddleTV.

Who we are

We are Aarun Carter and Nikole Scribner; we are a duo of 20-something music aficionados who happen to love old time music!

Aarun is the 2011 National Young Adult fiddle champion.  She has been playing the fiddle since she was 3 years old, and grew up with a respect and love for music that she wants to share with people of all ages around the world. (visit Aarun's website here)

Nikole is not an instrumentalist, but was awakened to fiddle music as a teenager and believes that everyone's life can be enriched by old time music and the community that embraces it.

We saw a revival in interest in old time music in our peers, and became curious as to why young people are increasingly getting involved in fringe genres of music, when, for most young musicians, traditional "radio" genres would more likely lead to fame and fortune.  This curiosity, combined with our love of music and the community of old time music lovers around us, lead us to conceptualize the idea of a small documentary about this phenomenon.

The idea grew from there, and now we would like to invite you to share with us the music, the incredible young artists, and the community we will document with FiddleTV!
